In this country alone millions of pets are in shelters, foster homes, or simply wandering stray. Many of these animals are surrendered to shelters or tossed out of homes because they develop some type of behavior problem. Often the pets haven't received proper training or socialization and have become unruly, fearful, or aggressive. These pets are given away when the owners find themselves unable or unwilling to deal with the problems any longer.
Many other times the issue is not a lack of willingness or effort, but a lack of compatibility. Pets are often selected because of their physical characteristics and size, or the recent appearance of the breed in television and movies. When selecting a pet in this manner, the new owners may be unaware of the temperament, exercise requirements, and general attitude of the chosen pet. Later they find that the high-energy dog they brought home is not suitable as an apartment pet and they are forced to relinquish the dog to a shelter.
Canine Acclaim tries to help prevent these problems by offering free temperament testing and training to local rescue groups. We believe that by evaluating the pet's needs and temperament before sending it into a new home, rescue groups can help place the pet in the right home and avoid having that animal returned to them time and again.
Temperament testing is a valuable resource for shelters and rescue groups, and one of the best ways to minimize the number of adoptable pets that are euthanized each year because they simply ran out of time.
If you are a member or volunteer of a local rescue group and would like more information about our "Free to Fosters" program, contact us and we'll send you a packet of information outlining the program.
