Positive Motivation

Positive motivation is a training method that uses rewards to encourage desirable behaviors and replace undesirable ones. Punishments and corrections are not used, as they are often much more difficult to administer correctly and have unintended side effects. Positive motivation training has improved the lives of dogs and dog owners everywhere. When taught properly, anyone can use these methods to train their dogs in a fun, safe way. There is no risk of damaging the trust between dog and owner. Shy dogs can learn to be confident and boisterous dogs can learn to be calm. But, I don't want my dog to only listen to me if I have treats... Contrary to what many believe, treat training and reward-based training does not create a dog that only responds when offered a reward.  This type of problem only appears when the dog is abruptly cut-off from receiving rewards before he is ready.  Many times a person may stop offering rewards before the dog is sufficiently trained and then end up resorting to using treats as a bribe when the dog fails to respond.  This actually teaches the dog to only respond for treats or rewards.  Treats should be given generously while the dog learns a new command and then gradually withdrawn once the dog understands what is expected of him.  When used correctly, treats or other rewards are by far the fastest and most effective training tool we can use! A recent study published on the Veterinary Information Network has linked the use of choke chains and other training collars to glaucoma. This added to previous research on the effect of these devices on the dog's trachea, neck and spine strongly demonstrate the danger of using choke chains and training collars.
